Hyderabad: Returning after a hiatus of two years, the annual grape exhibition had grape lovers thronging the Grape Research Station in Rajendranagar in large numbers and exhausting the stocks in just two days!
Several grape lovers in the city rushed to get their favourite bunches of grapes while harvesting them themselves from the grapevines at The Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University.

Having started on February 19, the stock at the exhibition this year was sold within just two days of its opening. Pointing out that there is no stock available at the grapevine now, Dr D Vijaya, Principal Scientist at Grape Research Station, said the event was a huge success as there was more farmers interested in grape cultivation this year.
“We had about 39 varieties of grapes on the two-acre land for the purpose of research. By the end of the cultivation, the yield is auctioned and sold to the public by the winning bidder. This year, all the varieties were sold out quickly, ” D Vijaya said adding that they had demonstrated some elite varieties of grapes like a red globe, crimson seedless, fantasy seedless grapes and so on, that are not usually grown by farmers.
The scientists at the Grape Research Station also hosted a brainstorming session on Area Expansion in Grape for over 60 farmers interested in grape cultivation. “The main motive is to promote grape consumption and cultivation in Telangana. We usually import the fruit from Maharashtra or Karnataka, but even Telangana can be a big producer of grapes. Through the brainstorming sessions, we also want to attract and teach farmers about the varieties of grapes that can be cultivated and also about increasing the market, ” Dr D Vijaya pointed out.
