GARDNER — From 2000 to 2004, Steve Duffy was a top defenseman for the Gardner High varsity ice hockey team, helping the Wildcats, under Coach Jean Guy Gagnon, make the postseason playoffs in three of his four varsity seasons.
All these years later, Duffy, a Winchendon resident, returned to the Gardner Veterans Rink in the past few months as the founder and commissioner of a new type of hockey league, not with blades on ice, but with inline roller skates on the dek hockey surface.
“We had our inaugural season of the Sharp Shack Inline Hockey League, ” said Duffy, who works as a service adviser for Porsche/Audi in Norwell, but also runs his Sharp Shack business from his home, sharpening skate blades and repairing skates, plus modifying and customizing roller skates.

The SSIHL’s first season began in early May and ran through last week with playoff games to determine a champion and runner-up among the four full teams whichcompeted every Friday night.
“Right after street hockey ended here at the Veterans Rink, we picked up the 7 p.m. time slot and we had a 16-game season, ” said Duffy, who also played on one of the inline teams.
The teams were co-ed, with players ranging in ages from teenagers to 52. Duffy plans on adding a junior league next year for players as young as 10.

Duffy began thinking about organizing a league for inline skaters a year agowhenmost skating rinks in Central Massachusetts were closed due tothe COVID-19 pandemic,
“So many people were looking to play some type of hockey, and the rinks were closed, so I started organizing some pick-up roller hockey, ” Duffy said. “The beauty of roller hockey is you can play it almost anywhere and especially outside and on all kinds of surfaces.”
“I’ve sold inline hockey equipment over the past year to customers worldwide, who play the sport in just about every continent, ” Duffy said. “It's been amazing how the interest in the game has boomed.

From organizing pick-up games with about 15 players, Duffy expanded, adding more skaters and teams before moving to a more structured game format at the Mylec Dek Hockey Center in Winchendon.
“Ice hockey players can adjust very well to roller hockey, ” said Duffy. “This sport is about balance, puck handling, puck control and body positioning.” He admitted that he is not the type for street hockey, saying, “I’m not into running, I’ve always been a skater.”
In the SSIHL games, it’s four vs. four players on the rink with each team having a goalie. All players glide on four inline wheels and chase a hard, 3.6-ounce plastic puck. An official ice hockey puck weighs between 5.5 and6 ounces.

Explaining the basics of roller hockey, Duffy said, “It’s very quick with players flying out there, moving across the surface. The game itself is all about possession and control, almost like in soccer where you wait and see what the opposing defense is doing and then you try to counter that and stretch things out.”The E as it is called, is the Eastern Mass. Roller Hockey League it began in 1999, and has two leagues, Saturday mornings and Tuesday nights. Both are 18 and over adult non-check recreational roller hockey leagues.
Pre season drafts and midseason trades are used to ensure league parity. All skill levels are welcome, but it's not a Learn to Skate league.
New players may be added midseason as space allows, and we also will fill in new players as sub players until a full time spot opens up.

The league started out in an old tennis court in Beverly, Mass. in early 1998 as a weekly pick up game. After a year of steady play, in the spring of 1999 plans for a league were made, and at that time, the Beverly Roller Hockey League was born.

Through sponsors and volunteers, the league and its players fixed up the old tennis court, bought new nets and a new scoreboard, and when the weather cooperated, the four teams would play a league game every Wednesday night.
This group of players would play official league games from the spring of 1999 until the fall of 2000 outside at the Beverly Youth Center. In the fall of 2000 the big move came.
The league was tired of waiting for five months of winter to end before playing again. So the Wednesday night league moved indoors to Saturday morning at Hockeytown in Saugus, Mass. Now the league had a bigger rink, better playing conditions, and best of all, no cancellations because of rain, and year round play.
